Workplace2go is on the committee for a non-profit event Step Up For Cancer. 2009 was the inaugural year for the event and a tremendous amount of time was required to set up infrastructure for the event. The following is a list of some of the infrastructure needed to support this great event:
- Logo
- Web site
- Registration process
- Marketing collateral
- Operational processes
While some of these items may seem trivial, a great deal of time is required to create and implement them. Think of creating a logo and web site especially when people are donating their time. Everything takes longer than you think – sometimes a lot longer.
However, implementing a virtual file server (i.e. a place to store information for all to access) took less than 1 hour. SharePoint is a great tool for non-profits especially for managing events. Prior to SharePoint, Step Up For Cancer used email to share information. Sometimes there would have 5 versions of the same document in our inbox. Changes were too frequent. We also used email when we needed to contact information for someone on the team. In some cases, it took days to get contact information.
